Why Pushing Your Thyroid to Work Harder Could Backfire.

Many thyroid health products overwork your thyroid in an attempt to release more hormones. This could lead to an autoregulatory phenomenon known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect.

This blog teaches:

Did you know that approximately 20 million Americans suffer from some sort of thyroid disease… and almost 60% of them aren’t even aware of their condition?

This is alarming! While the thyroid is just a small gland located in the neck, it produces hormones that influence every single cell in our body!

Keeping thyroid hormone levels in check is of the utmost importance. Hypothyroidism, producing too little of the hormone, can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and depression. Hyperthyroidism, producing too much of the hormone, can lead to unhealthy sleep patterns, nervousness, irritability, and vision problems.

Many assume hypothyroid issues can be solved by megadosing on iodine. This can actually lead to even more complicated problems!

Too much iodine and the Wolff-Chaikoff effect.

Most thyroid products focus on providing the body with iodine and the amino acid L-tyrosine.

This makes sense. After all, these two are the building blocks of the thyroid hormone that we desperately need.

Their goal is to push the thyroid into creating more thyroid hormone.

Here’s the issue; forcing your thyroid to work harder by megadosing on iodine can actually backfire. This was discovered by Drs. Jan Wolff and Israel Lyon Chaikoff.

They discovered that while iodine is an integral part of thyroid hormone, megadosing on iodine can actually inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis! This is an autoregulatory phenomenon now known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect.

So what options does this leave for those who believe they need to be producing more thyroid hormone?

In order to explain that solution, we must first make clear why we have to view the thyroid as part of a system and not in isolation.

The thyroid is part of a system.

We believe that simply pushing the thyroid to make more thyroid hormone is ineffective because our thyroid there are plenty other variables involved than just your thyroid gland.

Your thyroid is located near the bottom of a chain of command that starts with the hypothalamus.

When the hypothalamus recognizes that the body needs more thyroid hormone, it relays this message to the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland then directs your thyroid to synthesize thyroid hormone.

Most of the hormone your thyroid releases will be inactive; and that’s entirely normal. Roughly 7% is immediately usable by the body. The rest gets sent to the liver.

The liver creates the enzymes that have the responsibility of converting thyroid hormone from inactive to active. Until this happens, those hormones won’t be helping your body at all.

What does this tell us?

A lack of thyroid hormone could have nothing to do with your thyroid.

Your thyroid may be working just as well as it should; there are so many other parts of this system that could be causing a breakdown.

  • Perhaps your liver is currently undernourished and not converting the inactive hormone into a usable format. It’s no coincidence that many people who suffer from chronic progressive liver disease become hypothyroid.
  • Perhaps your levels of stress are causing your adrenal glands to secrete a lot of cortisol, thus contributing to thyroid deregulation.
  • Perhaps various parts of this system don’t have access to the antioxidants to protect them from oxidative damage.

The list goes on.

If a bodybuilder wants to increase their level of strength they can’t just work on their arms, even though those are the appendages that actually do the lifting. They must also train their back, chest, legs, glutes, and more, or they’ll never get stronger.

Similarly, when finding a solution for maintaining thyroid health, we have to nourish the entire thyroid system.

An all-natural, multi-system approach to maintaining thyroid health.
